Every day, 500 to 600 MLD of water is drawn from the Indrayani and Pavana rivers for the Pimpri-Chinchwad city. With nearly 3 million citizens dependent on this water for their health, its declining quality has become a matter of grave concern, requiring urgent measures. Against this backdrop, BJP MLA Mahesh Landge has urged Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) Metropolitan Commissioner Yogesh Mhase to convene an immediate meeting to discuss pollution control and the establishment of sewage treatment projects.

In recent years, rapid urbanization and industrialization in the PMRDA region have directly contributed to rising pollution levels in the Indrayani and Pavana rivers. Untreated sewage and chemical-laden industrial wastewater are being discharged into the rivers at several points. As a result, aquatic biodiversity has been endangered, and oxygen levels in the water have dropped to nearly zero.

As per the directions of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, PMRDA has undertaken the Pavana-Indrayani River Improvement Project. However, MLA Landge has stressed in his letter that the pace of establishing sewage treatment plants under this project must be accelerated.

Priority to Nighoje and Ravet Barrage Areas

MLA Landge has strongly recommended that sewage treatment projects should first be established upstream of the Nighoje and Ravet barrages, where land is already available and pollution levels are extremely high. “Considering the health of nearly 3 million citizens, this issue is very serious and requires the administration to take an immediate and positive decision,” he appealed.

Statement:

“The Indrayani and Pavana rivers are not merely sources of water, but lifelines for the health of Pimpri-Chinchwad residents. Nearly 3 million citizens are directly impacted by the quality of this water, which makes sewage treatment plants an urgent necessity. Setting up projects upstream of Nighoje and Ravet barrages is critical, and I urge the administration to act positively and swiftly. A detailed meeting on this matter will soon be held.”
