The move aims to make essential medicines more affordable, improve price transparency, and reduce the financial burden on patients who require long-term medication.

Medicines Covered Under the New Price Cap

The revised pricing applies to a wide range of commonly prescribed medicines, including:

  • Medicines for high blood pressure (Hypertension)

  • Anti-diabetic medicines

  • Medicines for heart diseases

  • Cholesterol-lowering drugs

  • Antibiotics

  • Medicines used for eye disorders

  • Vitamin D supplements

  • Selected injectable medicines and oral solutions

Strict Pricing Rules for Pharmaceutical Companies

The NPPA has made it clear that no pharmaceutical company or retailer will be allowed to sell these medicines above the government-approved retail price.

Key Guidelines

  • Medical stores and distributors must prominently display the price list of these medicines at their outlets.

  • The price list should be easily visible to customers.

  • Companies and retailers found charging prices above the notified ceiling may face legal action.

Penalty for Overcharging

If any manufacturer or seller charges more than the prescribed price, the excess amount will be recovered along with interest under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955, and deposited with the government.

New Products Also Covered

The government has clarified that pharmaceutical companies launching new versions of medicines included in the notified list must also comply with the approved price limits, ensuring a uniform pricing policy across the market.

Benefit for Patients

The decision is expected to make essential medicines more affordable and transparent in pricing, particularly benefiting patients who require regular medication for chronic conditions such as:

  • Hypertension

  • Diabetes

  • Heart disease

  • High cholesterol

  • Long-term infections

Officials said the move will help reduce out-of-pocket healthcare expenses while ensuring wider access to essential medicines at reasonable prices.
