Garbage Issue Flares Up: Corporators from Moshi Area Raise a Strong Protest

Following the accident at the Moshi garbage depot, the issue of city waste management has come to the forefront, and elected representatives from the Moshi area have now adopted an aggressive stance on the matter. Corporator Nikhil Shivaji Borhade has firmly demanded that the Municipal Corporation administration allow only waste from the Moshi area—specifically the Bhosari Assembly constituency—to be deposited at the Moshi garbage depot, while prohibiting the dumping of waste from the Pimpri and Chinchwad Assembly constituencies there.

In a memorandum submitted to Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Commissioner Dr. Vijay Suryawanshi, Borhade stated that a horrific accident occurred at the Moshi garbage depot on July 8, 2026, when a mountain of garbage collapsed onto the ‘Waste-to-Energy’ project site. Nine workers lost their lives in this incident, leaving many families devastated. Despite this tragedy, attempts to continue burdening Moshi with the city’s mounting waste have sparked anger among local residents.
The memorandum notes that the city’s waste has been disposed of at Moshi since 1982, while the city’s population has now reached nearly 40 lakhs. Approximately 1,500 metric tons of waste are generated daily in the city, with a significant portion being deposited at the Moshi garbage depot. Consequently, residents in the vicinity are facing serious health, environmental, and safety issues.
The statement warns that while residents of the Moshi area have endured the city’s waste burden for decades, they will not accept any decision to bring waste from other constituencies to Moshi in the future. A demand has been raised for the establishment of separate and alternative waste management projects for the Pimpri and Chinchwad Assembly constituencies.
Bohade has issued a clear warning that if the municipal administration decides to dump waste from other constituencies at Moshi, a vigorous protest will be launched through democratic means on behalf of local citizens, corporators, and villagers. His statement further notes that, if necessary, protests—including sit-ins—will be staged at the entrances of the waste depot to register their opposition.
Meanwhile, the issue of city waste management has become increasingly critical following the incident at the Moshi waste depot, and there are signs that this matter will intensify on both political and social fronts in the near future. The entire city is watching to see what stance the municipal administration takes regarding these demands.

If the administration fails to address our demands, a fierce protest will be launched democratically, involving local citizens, villagers, and public representatives from all political parties.
