Heavy Rainfall Strike: Pavana–Mulshi Dams Filled; Flood Threat to Wakad, Sangvi Area
Alert to Riverbank Villages: Disaster Management by Municipal Corporation and District Administration

Pimpri-Chinchwad | Due to continuous heavy rainfall in Pune district for the last 24 hours, life has been disrupted in Tamhini, Maval, Mulshi, and Khed areas. With the ongoing rain, the Mulshi and Pavana dams are filling up rapidly, and water discharge into the riverbed has been increased. As a result, a serious flood warning has been issued for Wakad, Sangvi, and other riverside areas.
Pavana Dam 98% Filled, Discharge to Increase
On Monday evening, Pavana Dam was 98% full, and it is expected to reach full capacity by tonight. Hence, water discharge into the river will be increased, creating a potential risk of flood situation in riverbank areas. The Municipal Corporation has appealed to citizens to remain alert.
Big Increase in Discharge from Mulshi Dam
Due to heavy rainfall in Tamhini area, Mulshi Dam is 96.50% filled, and the rate of discharge is rising rapidly. At 1 PM, water discharge into Mula River will be increased from 5,000 cusecs to 10,600 cusecs. The administration has stated that if the rainfall continues with the same intensity, the discharge is likely to increase further.
Lonavala Records 142 mm Rainfall in 24 Hours
Along with Mumbai and surrounding suburbs, heavy rainfall continues over the ghats. In Lonavala city, 142 mm rainfall was recorded in 24 hours on Monday. Since August 15, rainfall has gained strength again, and from August 17 it has further intensified. So far this year, 4,378 mm (172.36 inches) of rainfall has been recorded in Lonavala.
Flood Alert for Riverside Citizens
Water levels in Pavana, Indrayani, and Mula rivers are rising, and flood alerts have been issued to riverside settlements. The Municipal Corporation’s Disaster Management Department has made preparations for flood control. Commissioner Shekhar Singh has appealed to citizens to preferably stay indoors and carefully follow administration’s instructions.
Rainfall Warning for the Next Few Days
The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in many parts of Pune district and the state for the next three to four days. Hence, citizens have been urged by the administration not to step out unless absolutely necessary.
