New Delhi: Indian heavyweight boxer Narender Berwal shared a hilarious story from his boxing career with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a meeting with Indian athletes who won medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. The amusing incident involved a Pakistan boxer, Berwal’s coach and an unexpected connection with the name ‘Narendra’.

Berwal won the silver medal in the men’s 90kg-plus category at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Associated with the Indian Army, the boxer has previously represented India at international competitions and has established himself as one of the country’s prominent heavyweight boxers.
The India-Pakistan Boxing Bout
During his interaction with PM Modi, Berwal recalled a memorable bout against a Pakistani boxer at the 2015 World Military Games. Before the fight, he said, the Indian Army had given him a clear message to ensure that he did not lose to the Pakistani opponent under any circumstances.
Berwal went on to win the first round 4-1 and the second round 3-2, maintaining an advantage in the closely contested bout. However, the fight took an unexpected turn when the two boxers’ heads collided during the contest.
Both fighters suffered injuries in the collision and eventually had to visit a hospital for medical treatment after the match.
‘Bhaijaan, Ek Baat Bolun?’
The funniest part of the story happened after the fight.
Berwal recalled that his Indian Army coach at the time was also named Narendra Rana. After losing the bout, the Pakistani boxer approached Berwal and reportedly asked, “Bhaijaan, ek baat bolun?”
When Berwal agreed, the boxer made an amusing observation that left him laughing.
The Pakistani boxer reportedly said, “Bhaijaan, aapka naam Narender hai, aapke coach ka naam Narendra hai, aapke Prime Minister ka naam Narendra hai. Mujhe Narendra naam se nafrat ho gayi hai.”
The joke was based on the fact that Berwal, his coach Narendra Rana and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi all shared the same first name.

Berwal narrated the incident during his interaction with Prime Minister Modi, who also appeared amused by the story.
India-Pakistan sporting contests often carry intense competitive significance, but Berwal’s story highlighted a lighter moment that unfolded between the two athletes after their bout had ended.
