In a major crackdown on mobile theft, the Railway Police have successfully recovered 1,665 stolen and lost mobile phones worth ₹2.49 crore, returning them to their rightful owners after completing legal verification.
Every day, millions of passengers travel on Mumbai’s suburban and long-distance trains, making mobile phone theft one of the most common crimes on the railway network. In response to the rising number of such cases, Railway Police Commissioner M. Rakesh Kalasagar made tackling mobile theft a top priority after assuming office.

As part of “Special Search Operation-3,” Railway Police teams, with the support of the Cyber Cell, investigated cases registered during 2024, 2025, and January to June 2026. Officers relied on IMEI-based technical analysis, digital tracking, and continuous follow-up to trace stolen devices across multiple locations.
The recovered mobile phones, collectively valued at ₹2.49 crore, were tracked using advanced technology. Several devices had been taken to other states, prompting Railway Police to coordinate with law enforcement agencies across India to locate and seize them.
Technology and Coordination Drive Major Success
Officials credited the operation’s success to the effective use of cyber investigation tools, digital intelligence, and interstate police coordination, enabling authorities to crack a large number of pending mobile theft cases.
Commissioner Highlights Passenger Safety
Railway Police Commissioner M. Rakesh Kalasagar said protecting passengers and safeguarding their property remain the force’s highest priorities.
“Ensuring the safety of railway passengers and protecting their belongings is our top priority. This achievement was possible through the effective use of modern technology, cyber investigation, and interstate coordination. I appreciate every police officer who worked tirelessly to recover these mobile phones,” he said.
Owners Reunited With Their Phones
The recovered mobile phones were formally handed over to their original owners during a special event at the Railway Police Headquarters in Ghatkopar. Many citizens became emotional after receiving their devices, expressing gratitude to the Railway Police for recovering not only their phones but also valuable personal data stored on them.
