Heavy Rain Batters Khed, Jagbudi River Near Warning Level

Heavy rainfall has made a strong comeback in Ratnagiri district after a brief lull, disrupting normal life across Khed taluka and raising fresh flood concerns. Continuous downpours have caused rivers and streams to swell rapidly, with the Jagbudi River approaching its warning level, forcing the administration to place riverside villages on high alert.

Officials said the Jagbudi River reached 4.90 metres on Tuesday afternoon, just below its 5-metre warning level, while the danger mark stands at 7 metres. Revenue, disaster management, and local authorities have intensified monitoring and initiated precautionary measures in vulnerable villages as more rain is forecast.

According to district rainfall records, 876.33 mm of rainfall was recorded between Sunday morning and Wednesday morning, with an average rainfall of 97.37 mm. On Wednesday, Mandangad received the highest rainfall of 117.25 mm, followed by Guhagar (108 mm), Dapoli (107.14 mm), Rajapur (106.37 mm), Ratnagiri (94.11 mm), Chiplun (93.88 mm), Lanja (89.60 mm), Khed (86.57 mm), and Sangameshwar (73.41 mm).

The relentless rain also affected transportation. Waterlogging temporarily disrupted traffic on the Khed–Saveni road on Sunday evening, while strong winds uprooted trees at several locations across the taluka. Authorities confirmed that no casualties have been reported in these incidents.

With rainfall returning after two dry days, farmers have accelerated agricultural activities. However, officials have cautioned that if heavy showers continue, the Jagbudi River may cross its warning level in the coming days.

Dam Storage Improving

Water storage levels in Ratnagiri’s major medium irrigation projects are gradually increasing due to continuous rainfall. Current live storage stands at:

  • Natuwadi Dam – 29.31%
  • Muchkundi Dam – 31.78%
  • Arjuna Dam – 45.97%
  • Gadnadi Dam – 63.34%

No water discharge has been initiated from any of these dams so far.

River Status Across Ratnagiri

Except for the Jagbudi River, all other major rivers in the district remain below warning levels.

Current river levels:

  • Jagbudi – 4.90 m
  • Vashishti – 1.50 m
  • Shastri – 3.10 m
  • Sonavi – 2.70 m
  • Kajali – 12.70 m
  • Kodavali – 1.40 m
  • Muchkundi – 0.35 m
  • Bavanadi – 5.73 m

Authorities said continuous monitoring is underway, and emergency teams remain on standby as the India Meteorological Department has forecast more heavy rainfall over the next few days.
