Mumbai: To make travel between the two key cities of Mumbai and Pune faster, safer, and more convenient, the State Cabinet’s Infrastructure Committee has approved the development of a new bypass route spanning from Khalapur to Dehu Road. This decision was taken specifically in view of the persistently increasing traffic congestion and high accident rates observed in the Lonavala–Khandala Ghat section.

The project was officially sanctioned during a meeting held in the presence of the Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister. Running parallel to the existing Mumbai–Pune Expressway and the Old National Highway, this bypass route is expected to significantly alleviate the traffic burden on the Ghat section. According to experts, this new route will save commuters between 30 and 45 minutes of travel time, offering substantial relief to IT professionals, entrepreneurs, and tourists who commute between Mumbai and Pune on a daily basis.

The new bypass project is not limited merely to saving commuters’ time; it is also set to provide significant benefits for freight transport serving the industrial estates of Chakan, Talegaon, and other areas within the Pune district. It is anticipated that traffic congestion caused by accidents and incidents of landslides—which frequently occur in the Ghat section during the monsoon season—will now be substantially reduced.

The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) will undertake the execution of this project, and directives have been issued to immediately commence the land acquisition and tendering processes. Special emphasis will be placed on incorporating state-of-the-art safety systems and an eco-friendly design into the project. This initiative is regarded as a significant milestone in the development of the state’s infrastructure. Once completed in the near future, this route is expected to play a pivotal role in making travel between Mumbai and Pune safer, faster, and more seamless.

Reduced Travel Time and Risk:

Traffic congestion currently experienced on the existing Expressway and the Old Highway is now expected to decrease. Saving time on daily commutes will prove beneficial from both financial and psychological perspectives. During the monsoon season, the frequency of landslides and accidents is expected to decrease. The availability of an alternative route will allow for better management and control of accident risks.

Benefits for Industry and Freight Transport:

Transportation to industrial hubs such as Chakan and Talegaon will become faster and safer. Logistics companies will realize savings in both time and operational costs. The route’s design will incorporate modern safety systems. Furthermore, an eco-friendly design approach will help preserve the natural environment of the Ghat region. This project marks a significant milestone within the state’s broader infrastructure policy, and offers potential for integration with future Smart City and Industrial Corridor initiatives.
