Relief from Congestion on Pune-Nashik Highway
PMRDA: To Construct 4 ‘Missing Links’ in the Chakan Area!
Pune: Following the Mumbai-Pune corridor, a significant step has now been taken to resolve the traffic congestion issue plaguing the Pune-Nashik Highway. To streamline traffic flow in the Chakan area, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has decided to develop four ‘missing link’ roads. This project is expected to incur a cost of approximately ₹261 crore. These routes will help alleviate congestion on the roads leading to Chakan-Talegaon, Talegaon, and Shikrapur.

The problem of traffic congestion on the Pune-Nashik Highway has become increasingly severe over the past several years. Particularly during the morning and evening rush hours, motorists often find themselves stuck in traffic jams for one and a half to two hours. The Traffic Police and the administration implemented various measures—such as imposing time restrictions on heavy vehicles, removing encroachments, and relocating auto-rickshaw stands and bus stops—yet these measures failed to yield the desired results. The congestion issue is particularly acute at Talegaon Chowk, Ambethan Chowk, and Alandi Phata in Chakan.
While the State Government has decided to construct an elevated corridor in light of this situation, the completion of that project is expected to take several years. Until then, the PMRDA has undertaken the ‘Missing Link’ project as a temporary solution to address the traffic congestion. Reservations have already been placed on the relevant routes, and the land acquisition process is currently underway. Additionally, unauthorized structures located along these routes are set to be removed. The plan is to complete the entire project within one year of the land acquisition process being finalized.

Construction of Link Roads…
Under this project, four crucial link roads will be constructed. A road spanning 900 meters in length and 30 meters in width is set to be constructed between Hingne Chowk and Chakan MIDC Phase 3 (the Volkswagen premises, Kharabwadi). Additionally, a road approximately 1.2 kilometers long and 15 meters wide will be built connecting the Sany Company in Nanekarwadi to the Samruddhi CNG pump located on National Highway 60.
Traffic Diversion in the Chakan Area…
Furthermore, a route 2.5 kilometers in length and 36 meters in width will be developed between Bangala Vasti Chowk in Medankarwadi and Rase Phata on National Highway 55. Additionally, as part of the Western Bypass project, a crucial road—850 meters long and 60 meters wide—will be constructed to connect the Pune-Nashik Highway to Chakan MIDC Phase 5, as well as to link Talegaon MIDC with the Old Mumbai-Pune Highway. These various ‘missing link’ routes will enable the diversion of traffic in the Chakan area across multiple directions; this will significantly alleviate the pressure on major intersections and play a pivotal role in resolving traffic congestion.
