Washington: Tensions between the United States and Canada appear to be escalating after US President Donald Trump issued a fresh warning targeting the aviation sector. Trump, who has imposed steep import tariffs on several countries in recent months, has now threatened Canada with a 50 per cent tariff on aircraft sold in the United States.

Trump has accused Canada of undermining North American security by opposing the ambitious ‘Golden Dome’ missile defence project in Greenland. Following this, he has intensified his criticism, particularly over aircraft certification issues.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump alleged that Canada has illegally refused to certify Gulfstream 500, 600, 700, and 800 jets. He warned that if Canada continues to deny certification to US-based Gulfstream aircraft, the United States may revoke certification for Bombardier Global Express and other Canadian-made aircraft.

“Canada is effectively banning the sale of Gulfstream products. If this situation is not resolved, the US will impose a 50 per cent import tariff on any or all aircraft sold in the American market,” Trump stated.

The announcement has raised concerns about a possible escalation in trade tensions between the two neighbouring countries. Canada’s response to Trump’s warning is now being closely watched, as the dispute could significantly impact the aviation industry and bilateral trade relations.
