Pune | Everyone thinks about what kind of diet to follow during the monsoon. A nutritious diet is very important for a healthy body. So, which nutrients can be obtained from what kind of food, or what type of diet provides good protein? This information was shared by nutritionist Sagar Kolge.
In Indian food, four types of diets are generally seen – Vegetarian, Non-Vegetarian, Eggetarian, and Vegan. Many people think that if they eat only vegetarian food, they suffer from a lack of protein or don’t get enough of it. But that’s not true. The most important thing is to understand what exactly the body needs. The body requires macro and micronutrients. Micronutrients include protein, carbohydrates, and fat, says nutritionist Sagar Kolge.
The body is made from protein. After consuming food, the digestion process helps synthesize protein from essential and non-essential amino acids. Similarly, vegetarians also have many sources of protein in their diet. It is not necessary to eat non-veg for protein. Even with a vegetarian diet, one can get a good amount of protein. Non-vegetarian food is considered a first-class source of protein because every living organism is made of protein. That’s why animal-based foods are excellent sources of protein, explains nutritionist Kolge.
Next comes Eggetarian – which includes eggs. There’s often confusion about whether an egg is vegetarian or non-vegetarian, which is why it’s considered a separate category in food. The biological value of the protein that synthesizes in the body is crucial, and the biological value of an egg is 100 – meaning you get 100% protein from eggs. Hence, eggs are a great source of protein, says Kolge.
Then comes the last type of diet – Vegan. Vegan is a type of vegetarian diet, but it excludes bakery and animal products. Among these four diet types, the macro and micronutrients the body needs are the most important. That’s why protein supplements are available in the market to ensure adequate protein intake. But protein supplements are a different category altogether.
Protein supplements are processed food – meaning they mix quickly in water and are digested quickly once consumed. However, there are three body types: ectomorph, mesomorph, and endomorph. These three types require different quantities of food depending on the body’s needs and functionality. So, based on the following categories, the more protein you intake, the better it is for your body to receive what it needs, concludes nutritionist Sagar Kolge.
