One Doctor for Every 343 Citizens in Maharashtra, Says Economic Survey
State has over 4.18 lakh registered doctors including allopathy and AYUSH practitioners; report highlights healthcare availability

In a positive sign for the healthcare sector, the Maharashtra Economic Survey has revealed that there is currently one doctor available for every 343 citizens in the state. The report states that more than 4.18 lakh registered doctors, including allopathy and AYUSH practitioners, are currently listed in official records.
According to the data, by the end of December 2025, a total of 2,13,551 allopathic doctors were registered in the state. In addition, 1,05,966 Ayurvedic doctors, 9,462 Unani doctors, and 90,006 homeopathy doctors are also registered, taking the total number of doctors across different systems of medicine to over four lakh.
The state government has integrated traditional treatment systems such as Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy under the AYUSH healthcare framework to strengthen the public health system.
As of December 2025, 1,05,966 Ayurvedic doctors, including 10,025 postgraduate practitioners, and 9,462 Unani doctors, including 218 postgraduates, are registered with the Maharashtra Council of Indian Medicine. Similarly, 90,006 homeopathy doctors, including 3,761 postgraduate practitioners, are registered with the Maharashtra Council of Homoeopathy.
The report further notes that considering about 80 percent availability of registered allopathic doctors along with the total 2,05,834 AYUSH doctors, the doctor-to-population ratio in the state stands at 1:343.
To support healthcare services, the state currently operates 10,788 sub-centres, 1,953 primary health centres, and 354 community health centres for patient treatment across urban and rural regions.
Meanwhile, the report also highlighted a decline in polio vaccination coverage. During the first nine months of the financial year, around 22 lakh children received polio vaccines, which is lower compared to the previous years. In 2023–24, about 1.11 crore children were vaccinated, while 16.9 lakh children received polio vaccination in 2024–25.
