Measures to Prevent a Water Crisis
MLA Shankar Jagtap Holds Review Meeting; Issues Directions to Municipal Administration

Pimpri-Chinchwad: A detailed review meeting was held in Sector 23, Pradhikaran, Pimpri-Chinchwad under the leadership of MLA Shankar Jagtap, along with officials from the Water Supply Department. In view of the upcoming summer months from March to May, potential water shortages, and increasing public complaints, he issued firm directives to make the city’s water management system more efficient and sustainable.

MLA Jagtap highlighted the serious issue that although approximately 650 MLD (Million Litres per Day) of water is being lifted daily from the dam, nearly 25 percent is being wasted due to leakage. He directed that a dedicated technical drive be launched to control leakages and fix accountability.
He also instructed that a proposal be placed before the General Body to immediately stop water supply to constructions outside the municipal limits. Further, he called for a special drive against unauthorized water connections and strict action against those installing motor pumps illegally.
Planning in View of Growing Population
Considering the city’s population of approximately 4 million (including an estimated floating population of 300,000), discussions were held on determining per capita water supply norms. He emphasized the need to prepare a long-term water supply plan keeping in mind the increasing demand due to new housing societies and residential projects. He also directed that a separate survey of water usage in the industrial sector be conducted.
Focus on Wastewater Reuse and Rainwater Harvesting
MLA Jagtap suggested formulating a policy to mandate the reuse of treated wastewater for non-potable purposes. The city receives an average rainfall of 210 to 250 mm, with 250 mm recorded this year. Despite this, he expressed dissatisfaction over the ineffective implementation of rainwater harvesting and directed authorities to undertake concrete measures for rainwater storage and groundwater recharge.
Commitment to Regular Water Supply Through Coordination
Party leader Prashant Shitole and newly elected corporators of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation were present at the meeting. MLA Shankar Jagtap stated that coordinated efforts by the administration are essential to ensure regular, well-planned, and transparent water supply to the citizens of Pimpri-Chinchwad. He expressed determination to take concrete policy decisions to ensure long-term water security for the city.
“Ensuring regular, clean, and well-planned water supply to the citizens of Pimpri-Chinchwad is our top priority. It is unacceptable that 25 percent leakage occurs despite lifting 650 MLD of water. We will launch a special technical drive to curb leakages, take strict action against unauthorized connections, and accelerate wastewater reuse and rainwater harvesting initiatives. Considering the city’s growing population, we will work in coordination with the administration to make firm decisions for establishing a long-term and sustainable water supply system.”
