Poonch: Two Indian Army personnel were injured after a landmine exploded during a bomb disposal operation near the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district on Wednesday evening.

According to officials, the incident took place in the Kanga Gali area of the Mendhar sector, where an Army Bomb Disposal Squad was conducting a routine inspection. During the operation, the team discovered a landmine and began the process of safely defusing it. However, the explosive detonated unexpectedly, injuring two soldiers.
The injured personnel were immediately evacuated and shifted to a military hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment. Officials said their condition is being closely monitored.
Landmines Planted to Prevent Infiltration
The Army routinely deploys landmines along the India-Pakistan Line of Control to prevent infiltration by terrorists. However, heavy rainfall and changing terrain often cause buried explosives to shift from their original locations, posing a serious threat to both civilians and security forces.
As part of regular safety measures, bomb disposal teams conduct inspections to detect and neutralize displaced explosives. The latest blast occurred during one such operation.
Rusted Explosive Safely Defused
In a separate incident, labourers working in the Nalwah-Degwar Tarwan area of Poonch discovered a rusted suspicious explosive object. After being alerted, Army personnel rushed to the spot and safely neutralized the explosive following standard safety protocols.
45 Artillery Shells Recovered in Sopore
Meanwhile, security forces recovered 45 artillery shells from a house in the Sheer Colony area of Sopore during a joint search operation conducted by the Jammu and Kashmir Police, CRPF, and the Army’s 5 Rashtriya Rifles.
Authorities have launched an investigation to determine how the explosives were stored at the location and whether they were linked to any militant activity.
