History has been created! The Indian Women’s Cricket Team has become the World Champion for the first time by defeating South Africa by 52 runs in the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 Final, held at DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai.
After two heartbreaks in 2005 and 2017, India finally lifted their maiden Women’s World Cup trophy, ending a 52-year-long wait since the tournament began in 1973.
Batting first, India posted a strong total of 298/7 in 50 overs, led by brilliant knocks from Shafali Verma (87), Deepti Sharma (58), and Smriti Mandhana (45). Richa Ghosh added a quick-fire 34 off 24 balls, giving India a solid finish.
In reply, South Africa was bowled out for 246 runs, despite skipper Laura Wolvaardt’s fighting 101. India’s bowling attack was led by Deepti Sharma, who took 4 wickets, supported by Shafali Verma, who contributed with 2 wickets as well.
For her all-round brilliance — 87 runs and 2 wickets — Shafali Verma was named the Player of the Match.
With this monumental victory, India has etched its name in cricketing history, marking a new golden chapter in women’s cricket.
