With smartphones becoming easily accessible, many students are spending hours scrolling through Instagram, YouTube, and other social media platforms. Instead of focusing on academics, an increasing number of youngsters are dreaming of becoming content creators and gaining instant online fame through reels and viral videos.
Teachers from several schools have observed a noticeable decline in students’ concentration during classroom sessions. Discussions about trending social media content often dominate conversations, while homework, reading habits, and outdoor activities are gradually taking a back seat.
The desire to gain more views, followers, and online recognition has also pushed some youngsters to create videos in risky and unsafe locations, putting their safety at serious risk.
Experts warn that measuring self-worth through the number of likes and followers can negatively affect children’s confidence. When posts fail to receive the expected response, many youngsters experience disappointment, anxiety, and constant comparisons with others on social media.
Mental health professionals believe that completely banning social media is not the solution. Instead, children should be taught responsible and balanced digital habits with proper guidance from parents and teachers.
They emphasise that reducing screen time while encouraging reading, outdoor games, hobbies, and quality family time can help children maintain a healthier balance between the digital and real world.
