India’s Raja Muthupandi scripted an inspiring success story by winning the silver medal in the men’s 65kg weightlifting event at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow. Battling extreme poverty, financial hardships and years of relentless dedication, the Tamil Nadu weightlifter secured India’s fourth medal of the Games.

Muthupandi lifted a combined total of 286kg, including 126kg in Snatch and 160kg in Clean & Jerk, to finish second on the podium. Malaysia’s Muhammad Aznil Bidin claimed the gold medal with a total lift of 299kg, while Morea Baru of Papua New Guinea won bronze after lifting 282kg.
Born on January 12, 2000, in Kovilpatti, Tamil Nadu, Raja Muthupandi grew up in a family struggling to make ends meet. His father works as a daily wage labourer in a matchbox factory, while his mother earns a living by cleaning at a sweet shop. The family’s financial condition was so difficult that even arranging two meals a day was often a challenge.
Muthupandi’s journey into weightlifting began after watching his elder brother train in the sport. Both brothers shared the same dream, but the family’s financial burden forced the elder sibling to sacrifice his sporting ambitions and take responsibility for supporting the household.
While his brother stepped away from the sport, Raja continued chasing his dream of representing India on the international stage. Years of hard work, discipline and determination finally paid off as he delivered a historic silver medal for the country at the Commonwealth Games.
Although the gold medal narrowly slipped away this time, Raja Muthupandi’s remarkable rise from poverty to the Commonwealth podium has become an inspiring example of perseverance, sacrifice and dedication.
