Mumbai: Actress Preity Zinta, who is set to return to the big screen with ‘Bantwara 1947’, has opened up about an unforgettable incident involving co-star Sunny Deol. The actress recalled how the veteran actor once scolded her after she made a late-night phone call, long before the two shared screen space.

Speaking about her comeback after a long break, Preity said she stepped away from films to focus on her personal life and motherhood. Her last theatrical release was ‘Bhaiaji Superhit’ (2018), and she believes every phase of life deserves equal attention and appreciation.
Explaining why she chose ‘Bantwara 1947’ for her return, Preity said she had always wanted to work with director Rajkumar Santoshi. She described the film as an emotional family drama set against the backdrop of the Partition of India, emphasizing that it is more about hope and human relationships than politics.
The actress also reflected on how Hindi cinema has evolved over the years. According to her, Bollywood today is increasingly celebrating India’s history, culture, armed forces, regional stories and real-life heroes, unlike the earlier era when films largely revolved around the lives of Non-Resident Indians (NRIs).
Sunny Deol Once Scolded Preity Over a Phone Call
Sharing a humorous memory, Preity revealed that she knew Bobby Deol before entering the film industry. One night, at the insistence of her friends, she called Bobby Deol around 10:30–11:00 PM. However, the call was answered by Sunny Deol instead.
According to Preity, Sunny immediately asked, “Is this the time to make a phone call?”, leaving her embarrassed. She said she instantly disconnected the call and even wrote about the incident in her personal diary.
When she was later cast opposite Sunny Deol in ‘Farz’, she feared he might remember the awkward phone conversation. However, Sunny never mentioned the incident. Although she remained nervous during the filming of Farz, their bond gradually strengthened while working together on ‘The Hero: Love Story of a Spy’, eventually leading to a close friendship.
