Mumbai Water Crisis: Tansa Water Supply to Stop in 2 Days

Mumbai is staring at a potential water crisis as reservoir levels continue to remain critically low despite the end of June. The city’s water supply is set to face another major setback, with water from Tansa Lake expected to stop within the next two days after the reservoir’s live storage dropped to a shocking 0.05%.

Officials have warned that if the monsoon continues to bypass the lake catchment areas, Mumbai could soon face a severe shortage of drinking water.

While Mumbai has received spells of heavy rainfall over the past few weeks, the city’s crucial reservoir catchment regions have witnessed very little rain. So far, the catchment areas have recorded only around 100 mm of rainfall, compared to 700–800 mm by June 29 last year. As a result, reservoir storage has failed to improve significantly.

At present, the combined water stock across Mumbai’s seven reservoirs stands at just 6.93%, a sharp decline from nearly 40% during the same period last year.

The situation is already critical at Upper Vaitarna Lake, where the usable water stock was exhausted nearly two weeks ago. Mumbai is currently relying on the reservoir’s reserved water quota for supply.

Meanwhile, Tansa Lake has almost completely dried up, with only 65 million litres of water remaining, making it impossible to continue regular water supply beyond the next two days.

Unless substantial rainfall reaches the reservoir catchment areas soon, civic authorities may be forced to consider stricter water conservation measures to ensure drinking water availability across the city.

Current Water Stock in Mumbai Reservoirs

  • Upper Vaitarna: 0 MLD (0%)
  • Modak Sagar: 23,819 MLD (18.47%)
  • Tansa: 65 MLD (0.05%)
  • Middle Vaitarna: 22,308 MLD (11.53%)
  • Bhatsa: 39,636 MLD (5.53%)
  • Vihar: 12,499 MLD (45.13%)
  • Tulsi: 1,952 MLD (24.26%)

Key Highlights

  • Tansa Lake water supply likely to stop within two days.
  • Overall reservoir storage has fallen to just 6.93%.
  • Catchment areas have received only around 100 mm rainfall so far.
  • Upper Vaitarna has already exhausted its usable water stock.
  • Delay in monsoon over catchment regions could trigger a severe water crisis in Mumbai.
