Gautam Gambhir Explains Why Sanju Samson Was Dropped from India’s T20I Playing XI

India’s disappointing 125-run defeat against England in the third T20I has once again sparked debate over Sanju Samson’s exclusion from the playing XI. Following the crushing loss, head coach Gautam Gambhir finally addressed the decision, stating that the management had already communicated the reasons directly to the wicketkeeper-batter.

India, chasing England’s imposing total of 201 runs at Trent Bridge, were bowled out for just 76, registering one of their heaviest defeats in T20 International cricket.

‘We Have Already Explained Everything to Sanju’

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Gambhir said the discussion regarding Samson’s omission was strictly between the coach and the player.

“Sanju Samson has already received the explanation he needed from me. It was a private conversation between a coach and a player, and I don’t think it’s appropriate to discuss those details publicly,” Gambhir said.

He added that the team management remains completely clear about Samson’s role despite his absence from the playing XI.

“Sanju was one of the heroes of India’s T20 World Cup triumph. But sometimes you also have to consider a player’s current form. Team selection is always based on what combination gives us the best chance to win,” he explained.

Door Still Open for a Comeback

Gambhir dismissed suggestions that Samson’s exclusion meant the end of his chances.

“There is no rule that says he cannot return during the series. International cricket is all about performances and results. Every player has to earn and maintain his place in the Indian team,” he added.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi Gets the Opportunity

After Samson’s underwhelming performance in the opening T20I, the Indian team management opted to include Vaibhav Suryavanshi in the playing XI for the second and third matches as part of a tactical change.

India eventually lost both matches, surrendering the series after struggling with both bat and ball.

Questions Over Samson’s Future Continue

Following the England series, India will travel to Zimbabwe for another T20I assignment. Although the squad has already been announced, Sanju Samson has not been included. While reports suggest he has been rested, several cricket observers have questioned the decision, especially since Samson currently features only in the T20 format for India.

His omission has once again triggered discussions over whether it is a temporary break or a sign that the selectors are moving in a different direction.
