Ex-India Pacer Urges Jasprit Bumrah to Take One-Year Break

Mumbai: India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah should take a complete break from international cricket for six months to one year to regain full fitness instead of making repeated injury-hit comebacks, former India fast bowler Karsan Ghavri has said.

Bumrah has managed to play only two matches since IPL 2026 and recently missed the final ODI against England before being ruled out of India’s upcoming two-Test series in Sri Lanka due to a knee injury.

Speaking about Bumrah’s recurring fitness issues, Ghavri said the Indian selectors should stop picking the star pacer until he is 100 percent fit.

According to Ghavri, allowing a fast bowler to compete while only partially fit is extremely risky and ultimately affects both the player and the team’s long-term plans.

“Take a Six-Month to One-Year Break”

Speaking to Mid-Day, Ghavri advised Bumrah to stay away from competitive cricket for an extended period and focus entirely on rehabilitation.

He said Bumrah often returns before achieving full fitness and later breaks down again during crucial tournaments, despite workload management strategies.

Ghavri believes there is no point in selecting Bumrah unless he is capable of handling the workload throughout an entire series or tournament.

Calls for Shami and Bhuvneshwar’s Return

The former India pacer also urged the selectors to consider bringing back Mohammed Shami and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, saying both experienced bowlers have remained fit and consistently featured in the IPL.

He added that while injuries are common for fast bowlers, Bumrah has missed more matches than he has played over the last two to three years, making his availability a major concern for Indian cricket.

Limit Bumrah to Test Cricket

Ghavri further suggested that India should stop using Bumrah across all three formats.

According to him, Bumrah should primarily be preserved for Test cricket, while experienced bowlers like Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Mohammed Siraj can share responsibilities in white-ball cricket and rotate in the Test setup to reduce Bumrah’s workload.

He believes such a strategy would help prolong Bumrah’s career while strengthening India’s pace attack across formats.
