The ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia have begun to significantly impact everyday life across the globe, and India is no exception. After a sharp rise in LPG and commercial gas cylinder prices, the aviation sector is now facing a major setback due to an unprecedented increase in jet fuel costs.

On April 1, state-run oil companies announced a massive hike in Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) prices. In a historic move, jet fuel rates have surged by a staggering 115% at the start of the new financial year, pushing prices to an all-time high of ₹2 lakh per kilolitre in India.

According to Indian Oil Corporation, the ATF price for domestic flights in Delhi has risen by nearly 115%, reaching ₹2.07 lakh per kilolitre. Meanwhile, in Mumbai, the price stands at approximately ₹1.94 lakh per kilolitre.

International Flights Also Affected

The impact is not limited to domestic aviation. Prices for fuel used in international operations have also seen a sharp increase. In Delhi, ATF rates for international flights have gone up by 107%, reaching $1,690 per kilolitre. Kolkata has recorded the highest rate, touching $1,727.3 per kilolitre.

Impact on Passengers and Aviation Industry

This steep rise in ATF prices is expected to significantly increase operational costs for airlines across India. As fuel accounts for a major portion of airline expenses, industry experts warn that airfares are likely to rise in the coming weeks. This could, in turn, lead to a drop in passenger demand, posing further challenges for the aviation sector.

With global uncertainties continuing to influence fuel markets, travelers may need to brace for more expensive air travel in the near future.
