Nagpur | October 31, 2025:
Due to widespread rainfall across Maharashtra, the state has witnessed a sharp decline in electricity demand, prompting several power generation units under MahaGenco (Maharashtra State Power Generation Company Ltd) to temporarily shut down.

As of 1:30 PM on October 31, 10 out of 28 power generation units across the state were non-operational. Among them, all units at Bhusawal and Parli thermal power stations were shut due to technical or maintenance issues.

MahaGenco operates seven thermal power plants in Maharashtra with a total installed capacity of 10,200 MW. However, on the given day, the company produced only 4,247 MW, while the state’s total electricity demand stood at 19,356 MW.

⚙️ Reasons Behind the Shutdown

Officials cite two main reasons for the shutdowns:

  1. Low Power Demand: Continuous rain and cooler weather have significantly reduced power consumption across urban and rural areas.

  2. Technical and Maintenance Issues:

    • Chandrapur Unit No. 7 (500 MW) – shut due to technical fault.

    • Bhusawal Unit No. 6 (660 MW) – under repair.

    • Parli Unit No. 8 (250 MW) – closed for scheduled maintenance.

    • Nashik Unit No. 5 – temporarily shut as coal was diverted to other units.

Additionally, six units have been stopped as per “zero schedule” (no demand-based generation stoppage).

💡 Impact on State Power Supply

With reduced generation from MahaGenco, distribution companies are now purchasing power from the open market at higher prices.
Energy sector experts warn that this cost burden may eventually be passed on to consumers.

Meanwhile, the Khaparkheda power plant continues partial operations, producing 677 MW out of its 1,340 MW capacity — running at just 50% load.

If the current cloudy and rainy conditions end suddenly, electricity demand could surge sharply, possibly putting pressure on the grid and supply stability.

🗣️ MahaGenco’s Official Statement

According to Santosh Purohit, Public Relations Officer at MahaGenco:

“Power demand in the state has reduced significantly. Six units are shut under zero schedule. The rest are temporarily closed for maintenance or due to technical faults. All operations are within the norms set by the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC). Hence, there is no question of disallowance or losses for the company.”
