Chennai: A major aviation scare was reported late Tuesday night after an IndiGo flight travelling from Kolkata to Chennai suffered an engine failure shortly before landing. The incident prompted authorities to declare a full emergency at Chennai Airport, but the aircraft was eventually landed safely, with all 224 passengers and crew members reported safe.

The incident involved IndiGo flight 6E-723, which was operating from Kolkata to Chennai on August 11. According to officials from the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the aircraft declared a full emergency at around 11:29 PM after the pilot detected a problem with the aircraft’s left engine while preparing for landing.
Left Engine Failed Before Landing
The aircraft was scheduled to land at Chennai Airport at around 11:30 PM. However, moments before landing, the pilot detected that the left engine had malfunctioned.
The pilot immediately informed Air Traffic Control (ATC) about the emergency and followed the required procedures. Considering the seriousness of the situation, airport authorities immediately activated emergency response measures and placed the airport’s emergency services on high alert.
Pilot’s Quick Response Ensures Safe Landing
Despite the engine failure, the pilot maintained control of the aircraft and successfully brought it down at Chennai Airport.
The aircraft landed safely on Runway 25 at around 11:37 PM. Following the landing, emergency teams immediately approached the aircraft and carried out the necessary safety checks.
All 224 passengers, including the crew, were confirmed safe. After authorities verified that there was no further danger, the full emergency declared at the airport was withdrawn at around 11:47 PM.
Airport Operations Return to Normal
Following the incident, other flight operations at Chennai Airport continued normally. Airport authorities ensured that the emergency response did not lead to any prolonged disruption to regular airport operations.
The incident once again highlights the importance of quick decision-making and effective coordination between pilots, air traffic controllers and airport emergency teams during critical situations.
