Afghanistan opener Sediqullah Atal scripted a remarkable world record during the fourth ODI against Ireland on August 12, producing a sensational innings on his 25th birthday. Afghanistan defeated Ireland by 42 runs to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match ODI series with one game still remaining.

Atal was the star performer for Afghanistan, smashing 143 runs off 120 balls in a breathtaking innings. His knock included 17 fours and four sixes, as he dominated the Irish bowling attack and helped Afghanistan post a massive total.
What made the innings even more special was the timing. Atal scored the record-breaking hundred on his 25th birthday, entering the history books with a unique ODI achievement.
Atal Breaks Tom Latham’s World Record
With his 143-run knock, Sediqullah Atal became the batter with the highest individual score in an ODI played on his birthday.
The previous record belonged to New Zealand’s Tom Latham, who scored an unbeaten 140 runs against the Netherlands on his 30th birthday in 2022.
Atal surpassed Latham’s mark by three runs and moved to the top of the elite list of batters who have produced their biggest birthday performances in ODI cricket.

Atal and Ibrahim Zadran Power Afghanistan to Huge Total
After winning the toss, Ireland opted to bowl first. Afghanistan’s batters made the decision costly, piling up 343/9 in 50 overs, their highest-ever total in ODI cricket.
The foundation of the massive score was laid by an outstanding 231-run partnership between Sediqullah Atal and Ibrahim Zadran.
Atal played the aggressive role from the beginning, taking the Irish bowlers apart with a combination of boundaries and powerful strokes. He eventually completed a remarkable 143-run innings from just 120 deliveries.
Ibrahim Zadran provided equally valuable support at the other end. The opener scored a superb 107 runs off 118 balls, completing his century and giving Afghanistan two centurions in the same innings.
The combined efforts of Atal and Zadran put Afghanistan in a commanding position and gave Ireland a daunting target of 344 runs.
For Ireland, Barry McCarthy was the most successful bowler, claiming three wickets. However, he conceded 84 runs during his spell as Afghanistan maintained control throughout their innings.
Afghanistan eventually secured a 42-run victory, with Atal’s birthday heroics becoming the biggest highlight of the match. His 143-run knock not only powered Afghanistan to victory but also created a unique record that will now be remembered in ODI history.
