Chennai: In a major development surrounding the personal life of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and actor-politician Vijay, his wife Sangeeta Sornalingam has withdrawn the divorce petition she had filed before the Chengalpattu District Court, bringing the legal proceedings to an end.

According to reports, Sangeeta appeared before the court through video conferencing and informed the judge of her decision to withdraw the petition. After considering her request, the court officially closed the case.
As per reports, Sangeeta had filed for divorce in February this year, seeking the legal dissolution of her marriage with Vijay. The matter had been adjourned several times during the proceedings. On June 15, she had already expressed her intention to withdraw the petition during a virtual hearing, following which the matter was postponed to August 7 for final consideration.
During previous hearings, neither Vijay nor Sangeeta appeared in person before the court. Their legal representatives informed the court that both parties were unable to remain physically present. Since both sides were absent during the last hearing as well, the family court had deferred the matter until Friday.
Allegations Made in the Divorce Petition
In her original divorce petition, Sangeeta had reportedly alleged that Vijay was involved in an extramarital relationship with an actress. She claimed that she became aware of the alleged relationship in 2021 and that Vijay had assured her it would end. However, according to the petition, the alleged relationship continued despite that assurance.
The petition further alleged that Vijay and the actress travelled abroad together and attended public events, while photographs from those trips were regularly shared on social media. Sangeeta claimed the continued public attention caused humiliation to her and their two children.
She also stated that the alleged incidents and the controversies that surfaced on social media in 2024 caused her severe mental distress, leading to irreconcilable differences in the marriage. The petition had sought permanent alimony and permission to continue residing in the couple’s matrimonial home in Neelankarai, Chennai.
Despite those allegations, Sangeeta has now withdrawn the petition, effectively ending the legal dispute.
Vijay and Sangeeta were married on August 25, 1999, in Chennai according to traditional Hindu customs. The couple has two children—a son, Jason Sanjay, born in 2000, and a daughter, Divya Sasha, born in 2005.
