VIP Darshan Row in Pandharpur: Ministers Accused of Violating Collector’s Ban During Ashadhi Wari
Supporters of Minister Gulabrao Patil reportedly entered the temple despite the VIP darshan ban, while senior BJP leader Sudhir Mungantiwar initially faced delays, triggering criticism over enforcement of the rules.
Pandharpur: A controversy has erupted over the implementation of the VIP darshan ban at the Shri Vitthal-Rukmini Temple during the Ashadhi Wari, after allegations that the restrictions were not enforced uniformly.
Ahead of the annual pilgrimage, Solapur District Collector S. Karthikeyan had directed the temple administration to suspend VIP darshan from July 15, with the aim of ensuring smoother and fairer access for lakhs of devotees waiting in regular queues. The administration had also warned that violations of the order could attract legal action.

However, questions were raised over the implementation of the directive after BJP leader and former minister Sudhir Mungantiwar reportedly had to wait for darshan because of the restrictions, before eventually being allowed entry following discussions with officials. Speaking to the media, Mungantiwar reportedly expressed dissatisfaction, alleging a lack of coordination between the district administration and the temple committee.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra Water Supply Minister Gulabrao Patil also visited the temple for darshan. According to reports, several of his supporters entered the temple premises despite attempts by officials to stop them. Speaking to reporters, Patil acknowledged that members of his accompanying group had received darshan, stating that they had travelled nearly 250 kilometres to visit the temple.
The incident has sparked criticism from devotees, who alleged that the purpose of suspending VIP darshan was undermined if exceptions were allowed. Many pilgrims, who had been standing in queues for several hours, expressed disappointment and demanded equal treatment for all visitors during the Ashadhi pilgrimage.
Devotees said that queues are often halted whenever political leaders or other VIPs arrive, causing inconvenience to ordinary pilgrims. They urged authorities to ensure that the rules are implemented fairly and consistently throughout the pilgrimage period.
The controversy has once again reignited the debate over VIP culture at major religious sites and the need for transparent enforcement of regulations during large public events.
