Surya Pipeline Bursts on Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway

A major accident on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Highway triggered a massive water supply disruption after a speeding trailer rammed into the Surya Project’s main water pipeline near Bavkhal in Vasai during the early hours of Friday. The impact ruptured the pipeline, sending 20 to 25-foot-high water fountains into the air and resulting in the loss of millions of litres of water.

The damaged pipeline is the primary water supply line serving the Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation. Following the incident, water gushed uncontrollably for a considerable time before civic officials rushed to the site and launched emergency repair work on a war footing.

Officials said the Surya Project pipeline runs alongside the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway to supply drinking water to Vasai-Virar city. The collision caused severe damage to the pipeline, raising concerns over an impending water shortage in several parts of the city.

This is not the first such incident involving the Surya water pipeline. Earlier, the pipeline was damaged after being hit by a container vehicle at Shirsad, while another rupture was reported at Khanivade, highlighting repeated threats to the city’s critical water infrastructure.

The latest incident comes at a time when heavy rainfall has already affected the city’s water quality, with several areas receiving muddy water. Authorities have now warned residents that the pipeline damage could further impact water supply.

The administration has appealed to citizens to use available water judiciously and boil and filter drinking water to safeguard their health until normal supply is restored.
