Konkan Records 43% Rain Deficit in June

Despite being one of Maharashtra’s rain-rich regions, the Konkan belt witnessed a significant rainfall deficit in June this year. The region recorded an average of 378 mm of rainfall, nearly 43% below its normal June average of 662 mm, highlighting the weak start to the southwest monsoon.

According to rainfall data, Konkan received only 57.2% of its normal June rainfall, although the region still fared better than several other parts of Maharashtra.

Delayed Monsoon Behind the Rainfall Deficit

Weather experts attribute the below-normal rainfall to the impact of El Niño, which delayed the arrival and progress of the southwest monsoon across Maharashtra. Even after the monsoon reached the state, rainfall activity remained weak for nearly three weeks.

However, the situation improved during the final week of June, bringing widespread showers across the Konkan coast and offering much-needed relief to residents.

Ratnagiri Tops, Thane Records Lowest Rainfall

Among Konkan districts, Ratnagiri received the highest rainfall during June, while Thane recorded the lowest.

  • Ratnagiri: 536 mm rainfall against a normal of 813 mm (65.9%)
  • Sindhudurg: 498 mm against 880 mm (56.6%)
  • Raigad: 335 mm against 655 mm (51%)
  • Palghar: 228 mm against 419 mm (55%)
  • Thane: 131 mm against 461 mm (28.4%)

The figures indicate that Thane witnessed the most severe rainfall shortfall in the Konkan region.

Last Year Was Much Better

In contrast, Konkan recorded 101% of its normal June rainfall last year. This year’s delayed and weak monsoon has resulted in a substantial rainfall deficit, raising concerns for agriculture and water resources.

Heavy Rain Likely Over the Next Few Days

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that monsoon conditions have become active again over the Konkan coast during the past four days. As a result, moderate to heavy rainfall is expected across the region over the next four to five days, which could help reduce the rainfall deficit recorded in June.
