Fans of the iconic Bollywood blockbuster 3 Idiots finally have a reason to celebrate. Director Rajkumar Hirani has confirmed that work on a sequel to the beloved film is currently underway, raising hopes of seeing the legendary trio return to the big screen nearly 17 years after the original’s release.

Released in 2009, 3 Idiots became one of the most successful and influential films in Indian cinema. Beyond its massive box office success, the movie won hearts with its powerful message on education, friendship and chasing one’s passion.

Rancho, Farhan and Raju Set for a Comeback

One of the biggest questions among fans has been whether the sequel would introduce an entirely new cast or continue the journey of the original characters. Hirani has now put those speculations to rest.

According to the filmmaker, Rancho, Farhan and Raju will all return in the sequel, bringing back the characters that became household names across the country.

However, the story will not revisit their college days. Instead, the sequel is expected to feature a significant time leap, exploring where the three friends are nearly two decades after the events of the first film.

The new storyline is expected to answer several questions fans have wondered about for years: What happened to Rancho after his revolutionary ideas changed the world? Did Farhan achieve his dream of becoming a wildlife photographer? How did Raju’s life evolve after graduation? The sequel will reportedly focus on their careers, personal lives, marriages and the challenges they face as adults.

Script Development in Progress

Hirani revealed that the project is currently in its early development phase. He is working on the screenplay alongside writer Abhijat Joshi, who also contributed to the original film.

The director further disclosed that an initial draft of the story has already been narrated to Aamir Khan, who reportedly responded positively to the concept. However, the final screenplay is still under development and may take several more months to be completed.

According to Hirani, a clearer picture regarding the script is expected to emerge within the next couple of months, after which decisions regarding production and shooting schedules will be taken.

The original 3 Idiots featured Aamir Khan as Rancho, R. Madhavan as Farhan and Sharman Joshi as Raju. Supporting performances by Kareena Kapoor Khan and Boman Irani were also widely appreciated.

Made on an estimated budget of around ₹55 crore, the film earned more than ₹202 crore in India and crossed ₹350 crore worldwide, becoming one of the highest-grossing Indian films of its time.
