Illegal Water Extraction From Vasai Lake Sparks Outrage

A major environmental concern has surfaced in Vasai after allegations emerged that a real estate developer was illegally extracting water from Bondli Lake in the Papdi area without obtaining the necessary permissions. Social activists have demanded strict action against those responsible, calling the practice a direct threat to the region’s already stressed water resources.

The issue came to light on Thursday when residents and activists discovered that water from the lake located behind Ram Mandir in Papdi was allegedly being diverted for construction purposes.

With rising temperatures and increasing urbanization, natural water sources across Vasai have been under pressure. Lakes, wells, and other groundwater recharge systems play a crucial role in maintaining the area’s water balance. Against this backdrop, the alleged unauthorized extraction has triggered widespread concern among local residents.

According to social activist Milind Khanolkar, a 22-storey residential project has been under construction in the Papdi area for several years. A recent complaint revealed that an underground pipeline had allegedly been laid to transport water from the lake directly to the construction site.

Activists claim that the developer had been extracting water for years without obtaining approval from the Central Ground Water Authority, making the operation illegal.

Following complaints filed by Khanolkar, Dominica Dabre, and local residents, civic officials conducted an inspection at the site. During the visit, authorities reportedly removed the motor pump used for water extraction and disconnected the pipeline linked to the lake.

Officials stated that a formal inspection report would be prepared and submitted to the Tehsildar for further action. Authorities have also indicated that the matter will be referred to the town planning department for investigation into possible violations related to the ongoing construction project.

The incident has once again highlighted the growing challenge of protecting natural water bodies amid rapid urban development. Environmental groups have urged authorities to ensure strict monitoring and accountability to prevent similar violations in the future.
