Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Breaks Sachin Tendulkar’s 36-Year-Old Record, Earns Historic India Call-Up
The 15-year-old batting sensation becomes the youngest player selected for Team India after a record-breaking IPL 2026 season.
New Delhi: Young batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has been named in India’s squad for the upcoming tours of Ireland and England, as well as the Asian Games. At just 15 years of age, he has become the youngest player ever selected for Team India, surpassing a 36-year-old record held by legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar.
Sooryavanshi’s selection comes on the back of a sensational IPL 2026 campaign, where he scored an astonishing 776 runs and finished as the tournament’s highest run-scorer. Batting at an extraordinary strike rate of 237.30, the young left-hander secured the Orange Cap and established himself as one of the most exciting talents in world cricket.
Adding to his remarkable achievements, Sooryavanshi also broke the long-standing record for the most sixes hit in a single IPL season, previously held by Chris Gayle. His explosive performances had made his national team selection almost inevitable.
Chance to Break Sachin Tendulkar’s Debut Record
India will play two T20 Internationals against Ireland on June 26 and June 28 before taking on England in a five-match T20I series from July 1 to July 11.
If Sooryavanshi makes his international debut during these matches, he will become the youngest male cricketer ever to represent India at the international level. The record is currently held by Sachin Tendulkar, who made his Test debut against Pakistan in Karachi on November 15, 1989, at the age of 16 years and 205 days.
Should Sooryavanshi feature in the first T20I against Ireland in Belfast on June 26, he would achieve the milestone approximately one year and 114 days earlier than Tendulkar did, creating a new chapter in Indian cricket history.
Agarkar Praises Young Star
India’s chief selector Ajit Agarkar praised Sooryavanshi while announcing the squad, saying it was impossible to ignore the teenager’s performances.
Agarkar stated, “Performing consistently at such a young age in a highly competitive and pressure-filled environment is extraordinary. He is a player capable of changing the course of a match, and we have high expectations from him.”
He further added that despite intense competition for places in the T20 squad, Sooryavanshi earned his selection purely through outstanding performances.
Shreyas Iyer Appointed T20 Captain
The selection committee has appointed Shreyas Iyer as India’s new T20 captain. He will lead the team during the Ireland and England series as well as at the Asian Games.
Meanwhile, T20 World Cup-winning captain Suryakumar Yadav has been left out of the squad. Middle-order batter Tilak Varma has been named vice-captain.
