Mumbai | In a major relief for farmers ahead of the Kharif season, the Maharashtra government has announced two crucial decisions aimed at easing financial pressure and ensuring uninterrupted access to crop loans. The state has accelerated preparations for the much-awaited farm loan waiver while also issuing strict directives to banks against rejecting crop loans based on CIBIL scores.

The decisions were announced after a high-level meeting chaired by Devendra Fadnavis in Mumbai, where key issues including Kharif preparedness, seed and fertilizer availability, drought concerns, and farm loan relief were extensively reviewed.

Govt Speeds Up Loan Waiver Process

The state government has now initiated active groundwork to implement the promised farm loan waiver within the scheduled timeline. Discussions with banks have already begun regarding the required farmer data, procedural framework, and execution strategy.

The government aims to ensure that farmers receive financial relief before the Kharif season gains full momentum, preventing delays in accessing fresh crop loans.

No CIBIL Condition for Crop Loans

In one of the strongest announcements from the meeting, the government made it clear that farmers will not be denied crop loans because of poor CIBIL scores.

Several complaints had surfaced about banks rejecting crop loan applications due to low credit scores. Taking serious note of the issue, the government directed all nationalised banks to stop imposing CIBIL-related hurdles on farmers seeking agricultural loans.

Authorities confirmed that written instructions will be issued to every bank branch. RBI officials present in the meeting also supported the state government’s stand.

El Niño Threat Raises Drought Concerns

The government also acknowledged the looming threat of weak rainfall this year due to the impact of El Niño. Officials warned that rainfall during June, July, and August could remain below average, especially in regions like Marathwada and West Vidarbha.

District administrations have been instructed to focus on water conservation, promote low-water crops, encourage scientific crop management, and ensure disciplined use of irrigation resources.

Strict Action Against Fake Seeds and Fertilisers

The government assured that adequate stock of soybean, cotton, and maize seeds is available for the Kharif season. Farmers have been advised to purchase seeds only from certified and registered sellers.

Meanwhile, strict action has been launched against fake seeds, fertilisers, and pesticides, with several licences already suspended or cancelled.

AI-Powered ‘Mahavistar 2.0’ App for Farmers

To strengthen on-ground support for farmers, the government has rolled out the upgraded ‘Mahavistar 2.0’ app. The AI-based platform will allow farmers to seek instant guidance related to crops, weather, irrigation, pests, and government schemes.

As the Kharif season approaches, farmers are now closely watching how quickly the government delivers on its promises of loan waiver implementation and hassle-free crop financing.
