Tamilnadu: The results of assembly elections across five states — West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, Puducherry, and Tamil Nadu — were declared on Monday, sending shockwaves through Indian politics. The outcomes in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu proved to be the most dramatic, with ruling parties suffering crushing defeats and sitting chief ministers losing from their own strongholds.

Vijay’s Political Debut Pays Off in Tamil Nadu

In Tamil Nadu, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician Vijay, secured 108 seats in a strong electoral debut. However, the party still falls short of the majority mark, making coalition support essential for government formation. TVK has initiated talks with Congress to build an alliance government, sources confirmed. Vijay has been officially named as the Legislature Party Leader, marking his formal entry into Tamil Nadu’s political establishment.

Mamata Banerjee Suffers Stunning Defeat in Bengal

West Bengal witnessed one of the biggest upsets in recent Indian electoral history. The BJP successfully dismantled the Trinamool Congress’s 15-year stronghold, with Suvendu Adhikari defeating Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee by a margin of 15,105 votes in her own Bhabanipur constituency. Adhikari polled 73,917 votes against Banerjee’s 58,812. The BJP swept 206 of 293 seats, while TMC was reduced to just 80. With the majority mark at 148, the BJP is now firmly on course for a single-party government in Bengal.

Other States

In Assam and Puducherry, the ruling parties successfully defended their positions. Kerala, meanwhile, saw Congress stage a remarkable comeback, registering a decisive victory in the state.
