NAGPUR: A statement by Bageshwar Dham chief Dhirendra Shastri at a public event in Nagpur has triggered a wave of debate across political and social circles, with questions being raised about its historical accuracy.

The remarks were made on Friday at the Bhoomi Pujan and foundation stone unveiling ceremony of Bharatdurga Temple, held at the National Cancer Hospital premises in Jamtha, Nagpur. The high-profile event was attended by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Avdheshanand Giri, Govind Giri, Sadhvi Ritambhara, Shailesh Joglekar, and Adv. Sunil Manohar, among other dignitaries.

What Was Said

In his address, Dhirendra Shastri narrated an episode involving Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his spiritual guru Samarth Ramdas Swami. He claimed that after a gruelling campaign, a fatigued Shivaji Maharaj approached Ramdas Swami, removed his crown, placed it at his feet, and requested him to take over the administration of the kingdom — and that Ramdas Swami accepted.

Shastri further added that Ramdas Swami then reminded Shivaji that he was his disciple and placed the crown back on his head, entrusting him once again with the responsibility of governance. He used this narrative to assert that India has been the birthplace of extraordinary great men throughout history.

Shastri also stated that the Bharatdurga Temple would enhance the pride of the people and strengthen the vision of Akhand Bharat.

Historical Debate Erupts Online

The statement has set off a sharp debate on social media, with historians, activists, and citizens questioning the historical authenticity of the claim. Critics argue that no credible historical record supports the narrative that Shivaji Maharaj formally handed over his kingdom to Ramdas Swami. Reactions from various political quarters and historians are expected to intensify in the coming days.

The episode adds to a growing pattern of public figures making claims about medieval Maratha history that frequently draw scrutiny and strong responses — particularly in Maharashtra, where Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj commands deep reverence across all communities.

“Shivaji Maharaj placed his crown at the feet of Samarth Ramdas Swami and said — I am tired, please take charge of the kingdom. And Ramdas Swami accepted it.”
