Sharad Pawar has held membership in all four legislative houses—two at the state level and two at the central level. Sharad Pawar won his first election as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in 1967. Subsequently, he served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra four times. He also held ministerial portfolios at the central level. Sharad Pawar became the Chief Minister of Maharashtra in 1978. Later, in 1984, he contested the parliamentary election from Baramati; however, in 1985, he re-entered the fray for the Legislative Assembly elections.

Sharad Pawar served as the MLA for Baramati until 1990. He was elected as an MLA for six consecutive terms. Thereafter, from 1991 to 2014, he served as the MP representing the Baramati Lok Sabha constituency. Since 2014, he has been a Rajya Sabha MP. Over the last 60 years, Sharad Pawar has consistently remained a member of one legislative house or another—ranging from the Legislative Assembly to the Rajya Sabha. The only exception was the period spanning the years 1998 and 1999, when the Lok Sabha had been dissolved. Now, Sharad Pawar has once again taken the oath of membership for the Rajya Sabha. He is now set to serve as an MP until 2032.

Three members representing three different generations of the Pawar family will now be seen in Parliament. Supriya Sule serves as the MP for Baramati, while Ajit Pawar’s son, Parth Pawar, is also taking the oath as a Rajya Sabha MP representing the Nationalist Congress Party.
