India Contacts 20 Nations for Fertilizer Supplies
New Delhi: Rising conflicts in West Asia have placed a strain on global energy and fertilizer supplies. Anticipating the potential impact of the conflict involving Iran on fertilizer availability, the Central Government has taken immediate steps. With the upcoming Kharif season in mind, it is reported that work has commenced in “mission mode” to ensure that the country does not face any fertilizer shortages. To this end, it is stated that contact has been established with 20 nations.

As the Kharif season approaches, averting a fertilizer shortage stands as a major responsibility for the government. Consequently, work is simultaneously underway on three fronts: increasing imports, identifying new sources, and boosting domestic production over the long term. Approximately 30 percent of India’s requirements for Urea and Di-ammonium Phosphate (DAP) are met by countries in the Middle East. Any disruption in supplies from this region could have a significant impact on the agricultural sector. Therefore, measures are being implemented with the specific aim of preventing a fertilizer crisis.
India is actively strengthening its ties with North African nations—including Egypt—and is striving to boost fertilizer production through substantial investments. Overall, against the backdrop of this global crisis, India has formulated a multi-pronged strategy to ensure an uninterrupted fertilizer supply; the current scenario suggests that the government is fully prepared to prevent any difficulties for farmers.

To maintain a smooth flow of fertilizer supplies, Indian embassies across approximately 20 nations have been mobilized. Alternative supply chains are being established by engaging directly with local fertilizer manufacturing companies in these regions. Efforts are currently underway—through a series of meetings—to secure the necessary supplies. In particular, diplomatic engagement has been intensified with Russia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Algeria, and Egypt.
Russia has provided assurances to India that it will increase its fertilizer supplies by 40 percent. Discussions are also underway regarding the establishment of joint fertilizer projects in both countries, which will further secure future supplies. Indian companies are preparing to set up urea plants in Russia. Additionally, talks are in progress with Morocco, Jordan, and Belarus to increase imports.
