Maharashtra Tableau Steals the Spotlight with Ganesh Festival Theme at Republic Day Parade 2026

During the 77th Republic Day celebrations, the grand parade was held at Kartavya Path in New Delhi, featuring an impressive military display followed by vibrant tableaux from various Indian states. Among them, Maharashtra’s tableau emerged as a major attraction, drawing widespread attention for its rich cultural presentation.

The tableau was designed around the theme of “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (Self-Reliant India) and beautifully depicted the essence of Maharashtra’s iconic Ganesh festival. It showcased replicas of the Ashtavinayak Ganpatis, traditional dhol performances by women in Maharashtrian attire, and idol makers (murti artisans) sculpting Lord Ganesh.

Ganesh Festival and Economic Contribution

Ganesh Chaturthi is one of the most significant festivals in Maharashtra and plays a vital role in the state’s economy. During the festival season, an estimated ₹60–70 billion turnover is generated through idol-making, decorations, logistics, and related activities. The tableau highlighted how the festival contributes to local employment, craftsmanship, and economic self-reliance, aligning with the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

Cultural and Historical Significance

The tableau also paid tribute to Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, who transformed Ganeshotsav into a public celebration to unite people during the freedom movement. Today, the festival is celebrated with immense enthusiasm across Mumbai and the entire state of Maharashtra.

Traditional Performances Add Vibrance

A major highlight of the tableau was the traditional dhol pathak, where women in traditional attire performed rhythmic beats to welcome Ganpati Bappa, symbolising Maharashtra’s energetic and inclusive cultural spirit.

Rigorous Selection Process

Every year, tableaux from various states, Union Territories, and central ministries are selected through a multi-stage evaluation process conducted by the Ministry of Defence, which begins several months in advance. These tableaux collectively represent India’s cultural diversity and developmental progress on Republic Day.
