PCMC Fully Prepared for Monsoon Disaster Management; Citizens’ Safety Top Priority: Commissioner Dr. Vijay Suryawanshi

Pimpri-Chinchwad : With the monsoon intensifying across the region, the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has activated its comprehensive disaster management mechanism to ensure immediate assistance to citizens during any emergency. Municipal Commissioner Dr. Vijay Suryawanshi stated that the civic administration is fully prepared to tackle monsoon-related incidents, with public safety remaining the administration’s highest priority.

A high-level review meeting on monsoon preparedness was convened under the guidance of Commissioner Dr. Suryawanshi in the presence of Additional Commissioners Kuldeep Jangam and Vikrant Bagade, along with department heads, regional officers, and disaster management officials.

The Commissioner directed all departments, field officers, and employees to remain on high alert and ensure prompt resolution of every complaint received from citizens. He emphasized that no resident should face inconvenience during any emergency situation arising due to heavy rainfall.

Following recent spells of intense rain that led to waterlogging, clogged drains, and localized flooding in several parts of the city, the civic administration has conducted a detailed inspection of all vulnerable locations. Separate action plans have been prepared for each identified spot, with responsibilities assigned to designated officers and staff members. Authorities have been instructed to undertake regular inspections and maintain constant surveillance over these sensitive areas.

To enhance the effectiveness of disaster response, PCMC has decentralized its disaster management operations by empowering regional offices with greater authority and accountability. This is expected to facilitate quicker decision-making and faster on-ground response during emergencies.

The civic body is also undertaking permanent mitigation measures at locations that have historically witnessed flooding or water accumulation. These include removal of obstructions from stormwater drains, strengthening of the drainage network, deployment of dewatering systems at critical points, and improved inter-departmental coordination for swift action.

In a significant step towards community participation, ‘Aapda Mitras’ (Disaster Volunteers) have been appointed across sensitive areas of the city. They will assist citizens during emergencies, coordinate with authorities, and support rescue operations when required.

Meanwhile, the PCMC Fire Department has been placed on full alert, with all ten fire stations functioning round-the-clock. Rescue boats, life jackets, lifebuoys, ropes, dewatering pumps, and other advanced rescue equipment have been deployed and kept ready for immediate use. Special rescue teams have also been stationed to respond to incidents such as flooding, fallen trees, collapsed walls, and stranded citizens.

The municipal administration is closely monitoring daily rainfall data as well as precipitation levels in the Pawana Dam catchment area. Continuous assessment of dam discharge, river water levels, and their potential impact on the city is being undertaken. An independent alert mechanism has been activated to provide timely warnings to residents living along riverbanks in the event of a flood threat.

PCMC’s central flood control room is operational 24×7 and is coordinating with disaster response teams, the fire brigade, health, mechanical, electrical, and water supply departments to ensure seamless emergency management across the city.
