WhatsApp Username Feature: No More Sharing Mobile Numbers

WhatsApp is preparing to roll out one of its biggest privacy-focused updates ever, allowing users to communicate without revealing their mobile numbers. The platform is introducing a Username feature that will let people connect using unique usernames instead of phone numbers, significantly strengthening user privacy.

The feature is being rolled out globally in phases from June 29, enabling users to reserve their preferred usernames before the worldwide launch. Once available, users will be able to chat, join groups, and connect with new contacts simply by sharing their username.

A Major Boost for User Privacy

Until now, anyone wanting to start a WhatsApp conversation had to exchange mobile numbers, often exposing personal contact details to strangers. With the upcoming Username feature, users can keep their phone numbers private while still communicating securely.

Unlike social media platforms, WhatsApp will not maintain a public username directory. Users can only be contacted if someone knows their exact username, adding an extra layer of privacy and preventing random searches.

Extra Security with ‘Username Key’

To make the system even more secure, WhatsApp is introducing a Username Key, an additional security code. If an unknown person tries to contact you for the first time using your username, they may need to enter this security key. Users will also be able to change the key whenever they wish, giving them complete control over who can reach them.

How to Reserve Your WhatsApp Username

If the feature is available on your account, follow these simple steps:

• Update WhatsApp to the latest version.
• Open Settings.
• Tap Account.
• Select Username.
• Enter an available username and confirm it.

Businesses and content creators will also be able to choose usernames matching their Instagram or Facebook accounts. Usernames can contain up to 35 characters, while celebrity usernames will be reserved by WhatsApp to prevent impersonation.

Existing Chats Will Remain Unchanged

The new update will not affect existing chats or contacts. People who already have your phone number can continue messaging you as before. Essential security features, including End-to-End Encryption, blocking, and reporting, will continue to work exactly as they do today.

Global Rollout Underway

The Username feature is currently being released in phases, meaning it may not be available to everyone immediately. Eligible users will receive an in-app notification once the feature reaches their account, with a wider global rollout expected by the end of the year.
