Swara Bhasker Explains Why Many Bollywood Celebrities Haven’t Backed Sonam Wangchuk’s Protest
The actress says fear of backlash keeps many film personalities silent, while stressing she joined the protest as a citizen and a mother, not as a celebrity.

Actress Swara Bhasker has shared her views on why many members of the Bollywood industry have remained silent over activist Sonam Wangchuk’s ongoing protest, suggesting that fear of public backlash may be one of the reasons.
Speaking in a recent interview with The Lallantop, Swara said many celebrities have witnessed the criticism and trolling she has faced for expressing her opinions on public issues. According to her, this has discouraged others from openly supporting such movements.

Referring to Wangchuk’s protest, Swara said, “They are not supporting this movement because they have seen what happened to me. They know that if they speak out, they may face similar consequences.”
Sonam Wangchuk has been staging an indefinite protest at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, demanding a fair investigation into alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG examination, reforms in the education system, and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Several public figures and activists have extended support to the movement, while also appealing to Wangchuk to end his fast.
Despite backing the protest herself, Swara refrained from personally criticising Bollywood celebrities who have chosen not to speak out. She emphasized that the importance of a social movement should not depend on celebrity endorsements.
She said she participated in the protest not as an actress but as a concerned citizen and a mother, adding that the issues being raised are directly connected to the future of young students, including her own daughter.
Swara also expressed hope that future generations would have access to quality education and opportunities within India, saying she wants her daughter to grow up, study, and build her future in the country.
