Marathi Community in London to Get Their Own Permanent Space: MLA Shankar Jagtap
Success in Follow-up: Maharashtra Government releases ₹5 Crore fund to 'Maharashtra Mandal London' for property purchase!
Pimpri- Chinchwad : The Government of Maharashtra has distributed a fund of ₹5 Crore in foreign currency to make the premises of ‘Maharashtra Mandal London’—a primary cultural hub for the Marathi community in the United Kingdom—a “freehold” property. Chinchwad Assembly MLA Shankar Jagtap stated that this marks a significant success following his consistent follow-up with the Chief Minister and the concerned departments.
The official information regarding this development was provided to MLA Shankar Jagtap through a letter by the State Minister of Industries and Marathi Language, Uday Samant.
Speaking on the matter, MLA Shankar Jagtap said: “To facilitate the Maharashtrian citizens residing in London and for the holistic development of the local Marathi community, it was essential to acquire ownership rights (freehold) of the Maharashtra Mandal premises. In December 2024, I submitted a written request to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, urging the government to provide the necessary financial assistance to the organization.”

The state government took serious note of this demand with the objective of promoting and conserving the Marathi language abroad. Accordingly, through the ‘Rajya Marathi Vikas Sanstha’ under the Marathi Language Department, a fund of ₹5 Crore was distributed directly to Maharashtra Mandal London in foreign currency on March 25, 2026.
Strengthening the Preservation of Marathi Culture
Through Maharashtra Mandal, various Marathi festivals, cultural programs, and language classes are organized in London. With the acquisition of their own permanent space, there is growing confidence that the conservation of Marathi culture will gain more momentum. As a local representative, MLA Shankar Jagtap’s successful efforts in resolving this heartfelt issue for the overseas Marathi community are being widely appreciated in both Pimpri-Chinchwad and London.
“For our Marathi brothers and sisters living in London, ‘Maharashtra Mandal’ is not just a place; it is a home away from home that preserves our culture across the oceans. Obtaining permanent ownership of this space was a long-standing demand of the Marathi community there. The promptness shown by the Chief Minister and the Marathi Language Minister in following up on this demand is commendable. This fund is not just financial aid, but a pillar of support from the state government to spread Marathi language and culture globally. I feel immense pride that our culture will now flourish even more on London’s soil, keeping future generations connected to their roots.”
