Maharashtra Rain Update: Why Heavy Rain May Ease Soon

After a delayed onset of the monsoon, rainfall has intensified across Pune and several parts of Maharashtra over the past few days, bringing much-needed showers. However, weather experts believe this spell may begin to weaken from the second week of July.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), rainfall across most parts of the country is expected to remain below normal during July, mainly due to the influence of El Niño. Central, western and northern India are likely to receive lower-than-average rainfall during the month.

The long-term average rainfall for July stands at 280.4 mm, but this year, total rainfall is expected to remain below 94% of the long-period average, indicating a comparatively weaker monsoon month.

After witnessing an almost dry June, Pune finally received widespread rainfall from July 1, with rain activity increasing significantly across the city and nearby regions. Hill stations and ghat sections, including Tamhini and Lonavala, have recorded exceptionally heavy rainfall, with some locations receiving over 100 mm in a single day.

According to the IMD, the current spell of moderate to heavy rainfall is likely to continue until July 8–9 before gradually losing intensity.

Rainfall Expected to Reduce After July 8

IMD Pune scientist S. D. Sanap said the ongoing rainfall is expected to continue for a few more days. However, rainfall activity is likely to reduce between July 8 and July 14. He added that, except for Vidarbha, most parts of Maharashtra may receive below-normal rainfall during the remainder of July, making future weather developments crucial.

Meanwhile, senior meteorologist Anupam Kashyapi explained that the current rainfall has been triggered by three active weather systems, including a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. As long as these systems remain active, rainfall conditions will continue to stay favourable.

Heavy Rain in Ghats, Light Showers Across Pune

Rainfall data released by the IMD showed that Tamhini recorded 170 mm, while Lonavala received 140 mm of rainfall during the latest observation period.

Within Pune city, rainfall remained relatively light with continuous drizzle. Recorded rainfall included:

• Shivajinagar – 11 mm
• Dapodi – 11.5 mm
• Pashan – 13.2 mm
• NDA – 13 mm
• Chinchwad – 8 mm
• Lavale – 5.5 mm
• Shirur – 4.5 mm

While Pune city witnessed intermittent showers throughout the day, the ghat regions continued to experience intense rainfall.
