As they take the field together at the iconic “Home of Cricket,” Kohli and Rohit will become the first pair in Indian cricket history to play 400 international matches together.
The duo already holds the record for the most international matches played together for India, having surpassed the legendary partnership of Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, who represented India together in 391 international matches. Former captain Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid are third on the list with 369 matches.
Despite this remarkable Indian record, the all-time world record remains with Sri Lankan legends Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, who played 550 international matches together for Sri Lanka.
Apart from the historic milestone, the Lord’s ODI has generated speculation over Rohit Sharma’s international future. Reports have suggested that the Indian captain could announce his retirement from ODI cricket after the match.
However, there has been no official confirmation from Rohit Sharma, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), or the team management regarding his retirement. The speculation follows media reports claiming that Rohit may not be part of India’s long-term plans leading up to the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup.
For now, the focus remains on the series decider, where India will look to clinch the ODI series while Kohli and Rohit celebrate a landmark achievement in Indian cricket history.
