Former U.S. President Reiterates His Mediation Role in India-Pakistan Tensions, Says He Stopped the War Through Trade and Tariffs
Donald Trump on India-Pakistan Conflict:
Former U.S. President Donald Trump has once again commented on the India–Pakistan conflict, claiming credit for helping to de-escalate tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
During a dinner event with global trade leaders and U.S. military officials in Japan on Tuesday, Trump said, “In May, I managed to stop the conflict between India and Pakistan through trade. I have done a great service to the world.” He further added, “During that conflict, seven brand-new and beautiful fighter jets were shot down.”
Trump has repeatedly claimed that he successfully mediated between India and Pakistan during the Pahalgam attack and the subsequent Operation Sindoor, though India has consistently denied any such intervention.
He went on to say, “Every war I have stopped so far has been through tariffs. By using trade and tariffs, I have served the world greatly. India and Pakistan are both nuclear nations, and through trade measures, I was able to bring their conflict under control.”
Earlier this month, Trump had also claimed that his tariff threats helped to resolve eight global conflicts.
While speaking in Japan, Trump mentioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir, saying, “If you look at India and Pakistan, they were attacking each other. Seven new and beautiful fighter planes were shot down. These are two major nuclear powers facing off. I told Prime Minister Modi — you are a very good man. And I told Field Marshal Asim Munir — if you keep fighting like this, we won’t trade with you.”
