Jalna Groundwater Level Rises by One Meter After 139% Excess Rainfall
GSDA survey of 86 observation wells reveals significant improvement in groundwater levels across Jalna district; most drought-prone areas see relief.
Jalna Groundwater Level:
According to a recent survey conducted by the Groundwater Survey and Development Agency (GSDA) in September, the groundwater level in Jalna district has risen by nearly one meter this year. Officials attribute this increase to 139% above-average rainfall recorded across the district during the monsoon season.
Despite heavy rains causing considerable damage to crops and farmland, the rise in groundwater levels has provided much-needed relief to farmers and residents. The improvement in underground water tables has been observed across nearly all talukas, including drought-prone regions, signaling a positive trend for the upcoming dry season.
The district’s average groundwater level has improved to 2.54 meters, according to the GSDA report. Out of 110 observation wells surveyed, 86 showed a rise in water levels, while only 20 recorded a decline. Officials noted that water conservation efforts under the Jalyukt Shivar Abhiyan have also contributed to this recovery.
Additionally, by the end of September, 61 out of 67 water projects in Jalna district were filled to capacity, with the usable water storage reaching 83.93%. This includes the Kalyan Girja and Kalyan Medium projects in Jalna taluka, Upper Dudhana in Badnapur, Jui and Dhamna in Bhokardan, Jivrekha in Jafrabad, and Galhati in Ambad taluka — all of which are now overflowing.
Officials stated that the improved water storage levels are expected to ease water scarcity in both urban and rural areas in the coming months.
