Major Accident in Uttarakhand: Landslide Hits Hydropower Project Tunnel in Chamoli; 7 Workers Killed, 14 Injured
Dehradun | A major accident occurred at an under-construction hydropower project tunnel in Mayapur, Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, after a landslide caused a large amount of water and mud to enter the tunnel on Thursday evening.
Seven workers trapped inside the tunnel were killed in the accident, while 14 others were injured. Two workers are still reported missing, and emergency teams are carrying out a search operation to locate them.
Water and Mud Suddenly Enter 2-km-long Tunnel
The incident took place at around 7:05 pm on Thursday at a 2-km-long tunnel being constructed by Hindustan Construction Company (HCC). A landslide above the tunnel reportedly created a large cavity around 1.4 km inside the tunnel. Water and mud then suddenly rushed into the tunnel, trapping 22 workers who were working inside.

Authorities have installed powerful pumps to drain the water from the tunnel and facilitate the rescue operation.
Army, ITBP, NDRF and SDRF Join Rescue Operation
Following the incident, authorities immediately launched a large-scale rescue operation. Of the 22 workers trapped inside, 14 have been rescued safely, while two workers remain missing.
Joint teams comprising the Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), district disaster management teams and local police are conducting an intensive search operation to locate the missing workers.
The rescue operation is being carried out on a war footing as teams continue efforts to reach the affected section of the tunnel.
