According to officials, the incident occurred at around 3:30 AM on Friday at the Chanderkot security checkpoint in Ramban district. A black Scorpio, travelling from Srinagar towards Jammu, was signalled to stop by police personnel deployed at the checkpoint.
Instead of complying, the driver allegedly rammed through the barricades and sped towards Nashri, forcing security personnel to launch an immediate chase.
Police fired three rounds in an attempt to puncture the vehicle’s tyres and stop the SUV. However, despite the gunfire, the driver continued to flee at high speed.
As police closed in, the suspect abandoned the Scorpio near Dalwas and escaped into nearby forests under the cover of darkness.
Senior police officials rushed to the spot soon after the incident. Ramban Superintendent of Police Arun Gupta confirmed that the suspected vehicle has been seized and that an intensive investigation is underway.
Following the security breach, the Jammu and Kashmir Police, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), and the Indian Army launched a joint search operation across the region. Security teams are combing forests and sensitive areas between Chanderkot, Nashri and Dalwas in an effort to trace the absconding suspect.
Authorities have also deployed drones and sniffer dogs as part of the search operation, while security checks have been intensified on every vehicle travelling along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
Officials have not yet disclosed the identity of the suspect or the motive behind the dramatic escape. The investigation remains ongoing.
