India’s medal-winning campaign at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow continued in spectacular fashion as Murali Sreeshankar clinched a historic silver medal in the men’s long jump, adding another milestone to Indian athletics.

Competing in the final on July 29, Sreeshankar produced a best jump of 8.09 metres to secure India’s 13th medal at the Games. With this achievement, he became the first Indian athlete to win two Commonwealth Games medals in the men’s long jump, creating history for the nation.
Historic Comeback After Injury
The silver medal marked Sreeshankar’s second consecutive Commonwealth Games podium finish after winning silver in Birmingham 2022. His latest success is even more remarkable considering he spent nearly two years battling injuries before making a strong return to international competition.
Despite the pressure of competing after a lengthy injury layoff, Sreeshankar displayed exceptional composure throughout the final.
Brilliant 8.09m Jump Earns Silver
Sreeshankar began the final with an impressive 8.02m leap, placing him second after the opening round. He then delivered his best effort of 8.09m on his second attempt, briefly moving into the lead.
However, his next two jumps were ruled fouls, allowing Jamaica’s Tajay Gayle to overtake him with a winning leap of 8.15m. Sreeshankar was unable to improve in his remaining attempts and finished with the silver medal, missing the gold by just six centimetres.
Another Landmark for Indian Athletics
The achievement further strengthens Sreeshankar’s position as one of India’s finest field athletes. Having already scripted history in Birmingham, he has now become the only Indian long jumper to win two Commonwealth Games medals, underlining his consistency on the biggest stage.
Fellow Indian athlete Lokesh Sathyanathan also competed in the final but finished fifth with a best jump of 7.97m.
