Sonam Wangchuk’s Health Deteriorates, But Activist Vows to Continue Indefinite Hunger Strike
On the 18th day of his fast, supporters say Sonam Wangchuk will not end his protest until the government initiates formal talks, as political leaders and public figures urge him to reconsider.
New Delhi: Social activist Sonam Wangchuk has refused to call off his indefinite hunger strike despite a reported decline in his health, maintaining that he will continue his protest until the government initiates a formal dialogue.
According to the CJP (Cockroach Janata Party), which is leading the agitation, Wangchuk remains firm on his stand and will not end the fast unless meaningful discussions begin with the government. The organisation said the movement has entered its 25th day, while Wangchuk’s hunger strike has reached its 18th day.

CJP founder Abhijit Deepke stated that Wangchuk’s weight and blood pressure have dropped, raising concerns about his health as the fast continues.
Several political leaders have expressed concern over Wangchuk’s condition. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal enquired about his health, while Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray appealed to him to end the hunger strike.
Actor Omi Vaidya, best known for playing Chatur Ramalingam in the film 3 Idiots, also voiced concern, urging people to understand the issues behind the protest. Referring to Wangchuk’s inspiration for the character Phunsukh Wangdu, Vaidya made an emotional appeal, saying he did not want “Phunsukh Wangdu” to lose his life.
Several prominent personalities, including Akhilesh Yadav, Arvind Kejriwal, author Arundhati Roy, actors Naseeruddin Shah and Ratna Pathak Shah, have appealed to Wangchuk to end his fast while expressing support for the students’ cause.
Veteran actress Zeenat Aman also urged the Central Government to immediately begin dialogue with the protesters, saying that ignoring an influential thinker like Sonam Wangchuk does not reflect well on the country.
The CJP’s key demands include the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and ₹1 crore compensation for the families of students who allegedly died by suicide due to examination-related irregularities.
